Hey there Vickie, I use Aureus and Club Staffing as my main staffing companies. They seem to always find me something, but most the time they need a tech ASAP than a week or two out. Of course when an assignment does come up, there are about 10 others with the same job. It helps if you have worked with them before; they tend to work “harder” to find you an assignment. When I first started, no one would really help me get an assignment, but once you’re in and do a good job you’ll find an assignment with better chances. Hope it helps. Amanda
thank you Manda, i know something about club staffing and aureus medical. i filled out application with them around this time last year while I was still working a full-time job. And everytime they called me, they had an assignment and you have to leave within a week, but I wanted to put in a two week notice.
I just need to get my foot out the door.
You’re Welcome, most of the time I have 1-3 days to get to my next assignment when the company calls but I’m packed and ready to head out if needed at anytime. There are more tech jobs now than when I started, but when a assignment comes open and they want it filled now which is not always best for you. I also have found that assignments close within 24 hours and they want someone who can be there Monday when it’s a Friday. When I’m looking for an assignment I usually have a week off with lots of offers or “bids”. A few times I had a 24 hour notice to report to work and my current assignment was one day after finishing my last assignment and traveling 10 hours too. Can be a little frustrating at times but worth it in the end. Good luck on finding an assignment, It took me almost a year before I left my permanent job to travel and when I did it was the worst time of the year, it was 2 months before I found an assignment, but it’s much much better now. Hope this helps, any questions let me know. Amanda
Manda,
I'm thinking about getting into traveling...
What do you think was the reason it took 2 months to find an assignment...I'm worried I can't find one when I start.
how long have u been traveling...
how many assignments have u done?
I quit my permanent job in October 2008. It happened to be the worst time to start traveling, as many companies were not hiring travelers and cutting back. Since I hadn’t had a traveling job before and only 1 job as a Tech I wasn’t established as a traveler yet. I had one company tell me that if they had another tech looking for a job and worked with them before, they would focus more on them than me. Of course they didn’t word it that way to me, but I knew what they were saying. I tried to go with just one company, big mistake on my part, my recruiter said it would be no problem finding you a job but she knew nothing about lab. I gave a three month notice to end my perm job and nothing. I was packed with nowhere to go, I was in panic mode. I scrambled to get started with new agencies and fax this, send that, and call everyday to anyone that would pick up the phone to talk to me. By the 2nd week of December I found myself an assignment in Alaska and stayed there 10 months due to field being slow. I’m signed up with about 10 companies and have used 3 of them.
I’ve worked 5 assignments over the past 2 years and have been asked back to 3 of them for a travel job. I also extend most the time. Four of them asked me to go permanent. Now that the economy is better, there are more jobs out there. But then an again some don’t want a newbie to start an assignment, as they don’t have any feed back about you and your performance. There not going to tell you that either, it’s always rosy on there side, but you have to be ready for anything. I also have great reference letters and have had no problem finding an assignment now.
I hope this helps, there are more jobs out there and hopefully a better first outcome than me. Good Luck and let me know what you decide. It’s fun…
