Tax Deductions

Posted by Melissa1 on Oct 17, 2011 11:57 am

Hi Fellow Travelers.

I have recently taken my first 13 week assignment. I am very excited, however, my accountant tells me that I cannot take the mileage that I travel to commute to work off on my taxes. He also said that I can only take 1/2 of my meals and possible all or a portion of the hotel in which I will be staying. I need a experienced traveler to tell me how I can get my most deductions and is what my accountant said true. This is new for me and my accountant. Thanks for all your help!

Hey Melissa. Two words: Joseph Smith.

Joseph was a traveling RT and is currently an Enrolled Agent. He better describes this on his website, but it is basically a higher certification than the average CPA's that do tax returns. He has almost two decades of doing taxes for travelers. When I wrote my book on travel nursing, I made sure Joseph looked over the chapter I included on taxes just to be sure all my info was correct. He's well known in the travel realm and someone you will really want to use either instead of, or in addition to, your current accountant (especially since your current adviser does not have travel tax experience)

You can read more for yourself on his site at http://www.traveltax.com/ or just search out his name on any travel nursing forum.

Hope this helps.
