LPN Travel

Posted by Chelle74 on Nov 11, 2010 5:08 pm

Hello,
I am interested in travel nsg.I have been an LPN for over 10 years. However,I don't see many avaliable positions for the LPN.They seem to be obsolete.I am currently working on my BSN  and would love to get my foot in the door for when I do obtain my RN.Currently I work a casual position at a skilled nsg facility for the last 3 yrs. due to school.Prior to that I worked as an agency nurse directly out of nsg. school in 1997 to 2007.I absolutely love the change in pace and the challenges it had to offer.I am not sure if you know of any travel agency's that hire LPN's.One problem I seem to have is I have been out of med-surg. for some time now and have been in geriatrics which almost seems impossible to find as a traveler.Geriatrics doesn't seem to be the specialty of choice.
                              Thank you,

I suppose the first question would be, "for you, what would be the specialty of choice?"

If you liked med-surg, you will need to have recent experience in that to take a travel assignment, so that is where you need to get the foot in the door. Go back to something, (even if it's not med-surg) that is hospital based. There can be positions that are outside the norm (like geriatrics) , but as you have already seen, these positions are not easy to come by (and probably wouldn't sustain you long in your travels).

You can always try to find an agency that gives travel assignments to LPN's, but when it comes time for a travel assignment as an RN, they may not even consider your LPN assignments when looking at experience.

The best thing you can do is decide on a specialty (Med-surg, tele, L&D, whatever) and get back into the hospital setting. May not be the answer you wanted to hear, but in my opinion, it is the best course to follow.
