medical insurance

Posted by kaynurse39 on Jan 2, 2012 3:21 am

I am a OR nurse who started traveling w/ advantage RN last February.  I am paying $150 a week for family medical insurance. I can apply my re -up bonus to my medical insurance and make it $100 a week.  Is this the norm for most travel agencies?  It's $1000 deductible per person, up to 3,000.  Would it be beneficial to look into private insurance.  What do other travelers do?

I'm wondering the same thing. It seems like it would be easiest to have my own insurance and not have to mess with the potential hassle of lapses in coverage. What do other people do?

I carry a low cost, high deductible, indemnity policy.  I got it through einsurance.com.   I buy a single policy, I am in my 50's, in good health, no rx's.  I was not required to have a physical, not that it would have made a difference.  I am covered 100% for a yearly wellness visit, a mammogram if I desire and a couple other things.  I am out of network most of the time but it doesnt matter as it is all out of my pocket.  I get my yearly stuff done when I am home for the summer.

I did insurance through my travel company for my first assignment (medical was free) but I did not like the idea of having a lapse of coverage between assignments. I have full medical coverage (single) through BCBS of Alabama for 107.00 a month. The rate just increased from 98.00 but the peace of mind knowing I'm always covered is what's important to me. My company did offer 2.00 more an hour to "cover" the cost since I did not use their insurance which was more than enough! I don't have dental/vision this go around but for my next contract I'll just sign up through my company because it's cheaper. Also, if I need a doctor while on assigment I just go to BCBS website and find one who is in network. Great question!

Hello!

I thought it might help to have another agencies perspective in here.  Family health coverage can be expensive and $150 per week is definitely normal.  I think our plan is $122/week for a family.  However I've had travelers in the past just get health coverage for themselves (ours is free) and then find a cheap plan somewhere else vs. using the agency.  Most agencies do offer you the option of taking extra $$$ in your pay if you don't take the insurance so I would definitely research all options at hand.

I think the best way is to ask around on private insurance companies at your state. You can check some insurance companies on my link. http://www.quotes-center.com/list-of-insurance-companies
