In Search of Travel Buddy!

Posted by amarie86 on Jan 1, 2012 12:01 am

Hello :) I am currently doing a travel assignment in my home state (came back home because I was missing everyone) but I am already feeling the itch to see more of the country again! The only thing is, I really found it difficult to meet people on my last assignment, and didn't meet any other travelers. I'm wondering if there's anyone else out there with the same problem that is also looking for a travel buddy for a future assignment?? Would love to hear from you!

Amanda,

I wrote about this very thing a month ago. I have a freind who is a PT who traveled with an OT she met 2 years ago on assignment. They did not always work in the same building but were always close in proximity. At one time they worked for different travel companies and were able to do this. They also shared expenses which put more money in their pockets.I have met male and female therapists/nurses that travel together also. None of them were dating. They met in school or assigment. They were looking for someone to hang with in a new town.

Find someone that wants to go where you do, can get along with, and you'll find your buddy!!

Hey Amanda!

I understand the predicament your in.  In fact several of my travelers ask for me to connect them with other travelers when they go on assignments with me.  For example I just sent a lady to Baltimore MD (Johns Hopkins), and I gave her 3 other nurses info to call and connect with when she got there.  Also, I have people that ask me to find them RN's to "buddy up" with and take a travel contract together.  There are definitely options if you can't find anyone at home to go with you!

If you need my help or just need more advice let me know!

Hey Amanda,
I, too, would love to have a travel buddy! It seems like it might be a little hard to coordinate (different specialties, travel companies, dates avail for next assignment, etc), but would def enhance the experience to have someone to sightsee with, etc. I do med/surg/onc, and am currently in FL. Looking to start my next assign beg of March (preferred next location is CA). When/where are u looking to travel to next?

I would also like a travel buddy.  It is difficult finding two positions at the same facility with the same start/completion date.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Amanda, the same is true for me.  I'm currently in Rhode Island but heading home to Texas for my next assignment....I need some good old Southern hospitality.  I am married but my husband can't travel with me right now due to his job back home.  I would love to find a travel buddy so that I had someone to hang out with on my days off....

I have learned that larger cities offer more opportunities to meet people, since there are more MeetUp.com events.  Rural areas tend to have close niched groups and families which makes it harder to find a buddy to go out with.  Sometimes, it's surprisingly lucky and you meet a transient in a rural or suburban area, who welcomes the outsider traveler.  I have had mixed experiences all over, but have learned that one must say yes to every invite and just get out to social events.

Lollieab.....

I'm at Texas Children's. I found a room to rent very close to the medical center. It's working out fine right now. There are tons of apartment complexes, just don't know how many are open to short term rentals or are furnished.
Good luck wherever you end up!

I think having a travel buddy would be great!! Most of the places I have been I have not had any trouble connecting with some of the staff but for the most part I sight see by myself. I will be starting in Farmington, CT next week so if there is anybody in the area that would like to get out and do stuff let me know.

Kelly,
I do a lot of sight seeing by myself too. I've found some groups through www.meetup.org and local outdoors clubs via google. They can be a good source to find people for some activities in your current area.
