T Rob is correct in that most assignments are 13 weeks and many can be extended depending on the hospital's continued need and your continued wanting to be there. I personally extended all my contracts at least 6 more weeks, except for one related to a family emergency and one related to the hospital from hell.
6-month contracts are nice in that you have more options for housing, but if it's a bad assignment, it's going to be a long 6 months! Some people strive on the short 4 to 8 week assignments and prefer to work for a "rapid response" type of staffing company. If you are traveling with a family, the rapid response thing probably wouldn't be the thing to do, but as a single and "free" person, I would think that this might be a great option.
One of the major things that you need to remember is that you can not be in one area for more than 365 consecutive days if you are taking the travel "advantage" with your taxes... related to the fact, that you will be considered a resident of the assignment state instead of your home state. For more information on that, refer to
Travel Tax.
Hope this helps out!
