Assignment Length

Posted by krisRN4 on Nov 25, 2011 7:20 pm

Just have a question about nursing assignment lengths. What are my options? Looking to embark on this adventure and want to know what choices, if any, I have.

I always do 13 week assignments, but have seen them as short as 4 weeks and as long as 26 weeks.  I don't usually take assignments that are less than 13 weeks because the housing is always in an extended stay for the shorter contracts.  I like to have a little room to live.  =)

There is almost always an option to extend if you decide 13 weeks in a particular area isn't enough.

Good luck in your travels!!

T Rob is correct in that most assignments are 13 weeks and many can be extended depending on the hospital's continued need and your continued wanting to be there.  I personally extended all my contracts at least 6 more weeks, except for one related to a family emergency and one related to the hospital from hell.

6-month contracts are nice in that you have more options for housing, but if it's a bad assignment, it's going to be a long 6 months!   Some people strive on the short 4 to 8 week assignments and prefer to work for a "rapid response" type of staffing company.  If you are traveling with a family, the rapid response thing probably wouldn't be the thing to do, but as a single and "free" person, I would think that this might be a great option.

One of the major things that you need to remember is that you can not be in one area for more than 365 consecutive days if you are taking the travel "advantage" with your taxes...  related to the fact, that you will be considered a resident of the assignment state instead of your home state.  For more information on that, refer to Travel Tax.

Hope this helps out!

Hey! Thank you for the great advice. As a hopeful soon to be traveler, I would be engaged and ready to get out traveling. I am feeling tied down where I am and have this itch that just wont go away! I would want to see everything and get some great experiences and meet some amazing people. I am very social and would love to pick up different assignment locations here and there at the drop of a hat. Having the freedom to do so is what I find most appealing about travel nursing. That and getting to make my way across the country to help facilities out, meet new people and try new things. What more can you ask for?!

I appreciate any insight into traveling and am grateful to have found this website. I look forward each month to my Health Care Traveler magazine as I read the articles and see what exciting places people have traveled to. The next best thing from reading about all of this is doing it myself. While 6 months may scare most people, I think it would be the adventure to get out and try new areas. Independence, freedom of choice and an adventurous personality are fueling my drive to get out and take on a travel assignment.

Have a great weekend. Thank you again for your response.

Kristin
