Hello Everyone

Posted by DennisD on Jan 18, 2012 4:53 pm

New here and anxiously awaiting my first assignment as a Travel PTA.  I've spent many months during schooling thinking about possibly taking the leap into a traveling career. I'm a recent grad from college in Maine but job prospects are a bit thin  here here, So I've decided to just "go for it". I'm excited and anxious to get started.  I already have and will continue to make this site a frequent tool to help get me through all experiences ahead of me.  I welcome any advice and encouragement in this next chapter of my life.  I'm newly single and no roots holding me in place so this is a perfect time for me to explore and meet many new friends. I've traveled a bit in the military but this will still be a new and challenging time for me. I welcome any input on some agencies to check out or to definately stay away from. I'm currently licensed in Maine and in process of getting licensed in TX and AZ for now. Was told TX was a good place to start out as a PTA.
still be a new and exciting challenge for me

Hi and welcome. I started inTexas as a lot of travelers do. It is the fastest place to get a license and plentiful in jobs. Good luck with your new start!

Hi Dennis, welcome to the forum.  Congrats on deciding to travel and it’s true that TX is one of the better states for a traveling PTA.  I work with several PTAs in TX and have a solid ear to the ground on jobs and upcoming jobs.  Most recruiters may not mention that many of the facilities are a little rough around the edges and I wouldn’t even place a therapist in some.  I would also expect to see most jobs in the middle of nowhere.  It’s best to be as open as possible to open up more possibilities.  Other than working for Therapy Management Corp (they pay terrible) you can expect a pretty good paycheck though.  You should fall between $1300 and $1400 a week including single insurance.

AZ does not have a lot of opportunities at the moment but I expect it to get a little better in the upcoming months but overall it’s a tuff state for PTAs.  Again, you would need to be open to the whole state.

Feel free to give me a call anytime if you have any questions.  I would be happy to help.  I’m generally in the office M-F 830-7.

p.s.  I would also recommend getting a CA license.
