All bleeding stops... eventually.

Posted by BuRN on Jan 11, 2012 4:39 am

Hello, everyone! I'm thrilled to have stumbled upon this site... I guess those little ads on the side of Facebook can be of value every so often. I'm Adam. I'm currently one of thousands... maybe millions (it seems that way sometimes) of BSN nurses in beautiful city of Louisville, KY. As of now, I'm working for University of Louisville Hospital, a Level-1 trauma hospital smack in the middle of downtown Louisville. It's quite the learning experience to say the least. I graduated from the University of Louisville a measly 8 months ago, but have worked in the ER for about 5 years prior as an EMT/ER Tech as well as worked as a medical director for a summer camp in Hunt, Texas.
I originally got into nursing because I couldn't pass calculus, ergo couldn't make it into medical school. Serendipity, I say. I love what I do now. It's by no means glamerous, easy, laid back, or any of the other words used to describe a non-hostile work environment. I believe I speak with security and the police more than the MD's and I'm now the go-to guy at putting 4-point restraints on bucking patients and can thread an 18-gauge angiocath into the AC of the most seasoned IV drug user. But, as I said when I applied for this job, I'm doing this to learn.
I've wanted to travel nurse since I decided to put the RN behind my name. Everyone says I'm a nomad so now I'm thrilled to have found a career that rewards my inability to sign an apartment lease for more than 6-months (even then I get a pre-signature anxiety contemplating being in the same place for the ENTIRE 6 months).
So that's a little about me. I'm planning on setting out in August of this year. I'd love to meet some veterans of the road, hear some advice, or form some contacts so when I do take my first cross-country gig, I won't be the lonely guy at the Starbucks on my off days. Take care, and good luck!

That's a pretty good introduction. Good luck with your travels. This website is definitely a good resource as a new traveler to get some advise.

Hi Adam,

Congrats on becoming an RN. You will learn a lot of things from the people on here. I am new to travel but have been an RN for about 6 years. I am in ICU. I sent a message to David RN on here he wrote the Travel Nurse's Bible. He was very helpful. I had ordered his book but it took a long time to get here and he answered my e-mail and answered all of my questions. He also writes the Ask a Nurse forum.
Welcome!

Ha! Love the commitment issue! I also have that fear now. I was stable & in one place for so long, that I have this itch building in me. Lucky for me the internet exists everywhere, so when my circumstances allow, I'm seriously considering a little bit of nomadic travel myself!
