I am considering getting a small dog (french bulldog) to travel with. My boyfriend and I are both PTA's and will be moving to Tampa, FL at the end of November. I am wondering how difficult it will be to find housing. We have found our own housing the past few jobs and sometimes it seems hard enough doing that, let alone finding somewhere that allows pets too. Has anyone had experience with this and will it be worth it? I really would love to get one, but if it will make things much more stressful it probably wouldnt be a great idea.
Having a pet always makes things more difficult. But, I know that a lot of extended stays allow dogs. It’s tuff giving you advise on this because it’s a case by case situation. I have a handful of travelers that travel with pets and we’ve had are ups and downs with housing but it has always worked out. But not without compromise though.
Finding housing for those with smaller dogs are definitely easier than bigger dogs. Keep in mind that having a pet can pose potential problems, especially if you are getting a pup that requires potty training while on the road. (Yikes!) For pets in general, expect that the agency will cover housing as norm but you may have to sign the lease in your name and take on the pet deposit/fees (maybe not), it's case by case. Hope that helps. Sunny
I always travel with my girls. My company has been great at finding me housing even on "short term assignments" I do however have to pay for a pet deposit/fee if required. At times these fees can be expensive so if your company is finding you housing ask if they would break down the pet deposit into weekly equal payments until the deposit amount is met. One other thing that i do before i inquire or accept my next assignment I search the area that i will be going to i check to see how dog friendly that area is and if off leash dog parks are available.
I have been traveling with my two dogs (golden and beagle spaniel). I have been fortunate to be able to rent houses. My last assignment I was able to rent a cabin with a doggie daycare next door. I would not travel without my best friends. The recruiters kept pushing apartments and that would not work. It takes a lot of research finding houses on a 3 month lease, but it can be done. I bought two crates and as long as I stop every 2 or 3 hours my dogs are great in the car. I have not had trouble finding pet sitters either. Being that I was working long hours my dogs needed a walk during the day. My dogs are very "high energy" dogs and I have not had a problem.
I've travel with my baby as well and have had no problems either. Both companies I've worked with have been great. The breed and size definately make a difference though! Good luck!
I have been traveling with 2 large dogs for 7 years. There is definitely a few things to help with finding "pet friendly" and short term leases. Here is a link to some blogs about it:
Thanks so much for the responses!! It's a tough decision and I appreciate all the suggestions! I am surprised to see the amount of people that travel with pets :). This is really a great site and has been so much help!
Thanks again everyone!
