Health Insurance recommendation needed

Posted by Wes Herdlein on Apr 6, 2010 8:35 pm

I have an OT traveler friend that wants to leave her company secondary to bad health insurance.  She wants to buy her own private policy but has had trouble finding one.  There always seems to be an issue with her moving to multiple states and not being near her "home base preferred providers".  Does anyone have a recommendation for an insurance company?  Thanks!

hey !!!

i finally got around to sitting down..... to finally join your band of healthcare gypsies. i am still in olympia, but am planning to leave the end of may..i did see that another traveler was planning to hike rainier !!!! one of my sons came to visit last week...we went skiing in a blizzard at crystal mt. one day & kayaking off the san juan islands the next !!!!...that's what makes WA such a great place to visit.

PSPH is still looking for 2 PTs 2 STs & 2OTs...a never ending search...just in case anyone wants to know !!!!

looks like you & rebecca are well. am still planning my trip to fort worth may 12-16..can't wait !!!

when i spoke with you last, you mentioned a friend (maybe a woman in seattle?????) who might have some insurance info..i was wondering if she is a member of HCTB...i still am not having any luck with finding private insurance....if you don't feel comfortable giving me her name..would you share my name with her & she can call me !!!!

i did check out the name of the company that you are with right now...i think that's the one that you said had a good insurance policy !!! let me know.
charlottesville, va.........one of my very favorite places on earth.........just not close enough the water ( a necessity for me!!! )

i'll keep in touch & you do the same,

be well,
gray

I have had my own insurance for about 5 or 6 years now.  It covers me thoughout  the US as well as when I vacation abroad.  You need to find a private insurance agent who is licensed in your state of residence.  The agent can then search the many companys to find what will work best for you.  My agent is licensed in CO, NM, and Kansas and I can give anyone his info who wants it.  You can also search online for an agent in your state.  You will fill out a simple form and then you will be contacted by plenty of them.  At that point, just figure out who you want to work with.  They should give you lots of options and be willing to work with your unique needs.  Don't work with the anyone that just offers you coverage with one insurance company and is not willing to do more.  It is sort of like finding the right recruiter.  I'm sorry I can't remember which site I went to, it was so long ago, but I remember that the process was pretty painfree.

www.ehealth.com will give you options from several insurance companies, as well as let you compare plans.

Re: health insurance, I have been traveling for 11 years and I have my own insurance, that way I have the freedom of traveling with whichever company that has what I want and where I want to go and the best pay rate, I am insured with BlueCross Blue Sheild, and so is my husband, we have used this insurance in many states and with no problem, they have covered us very well, my husband became really ill in California and we used the insurance and the bill was over 100,000. and all we paid of that was around 4,000.00, they have been good to us, don't require any refferals and easy to use. Actually we have had several real major hospital stays and they have been real good to us. I have used this insurance in many, many, states, you just go through your home state and purchase it, if we use it away from home the diff is 80/20, instead of 90/10, but its still good coverage.  Hope this helps someone out.

Thanks for the info on BCBS. My hubby and I are going to start traveling this fall, and I was starting to think about getting our own health insurance vs. working with the agency. We are both healthy and go to the doctor maybe 2 times a year each.

How do you all feel about carrying your own insurance vs using the travel agency?
