Florida

Posted by KelliTravels on Jan 22, 2012 8:47 pm

So we are looking at Florida as an option for one of our next agginments. We have both been to several cities within FL, but it's been a while and so we would love any input/advice. What cities do you recommend. Or NOT recommend. We know Miami is not an option for us. We are leaning toward Tampa and/or Key West areas. There are of course tons of travel jobs throughout the state, so we would just love to hear what others have to say. Anybody familiar with Sarasota? Daytona Beach? Naples? Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

It’s hit or miss in FL.  Jobs show up just about everywhere.  Unfortunately Miami and down to the Keys are the worst areas.  We did get in a couple of positions in the Keys last year but I wouldn’t count on it.  Fort Meyers to Tampa is pretty good, central FL is also good around areas like Lakeland, Kissimmee, Eustis, Winter Haven, and Ocala.  The East coast is pretty good from Jacksonville down to Fort Lauderdale.

Also keep in mind Fl is very saturated which drives rates down.  It should get a little better as summer gets closer.  And I would say that the majority of openings will be SNFs.  Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Kelli,
I am in Ft Myers and love it.  There are quite a few seasonal positions in the area, contact the hospital or facility directly, many do not use agencies any more but have thier own competitive package (Tampa, FT Myers and Naples hospitals have special seasonal rates) .  Yes, Florida wages tend to be a little lower than some states but the cost of living can also be very reasonable if you dont need to live in a deluxe condo.  Lots of things to do here, I like it better than the keys, which you can visit very reasonably be boat or air.  Gulf coast beaches are much nicer, I think, than Atlantic.
But you gotta love geriatrics, even if you are not working in a SNF!

I am working at an HCA facility West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, FL and loving every minute of it! No complaints of the hospital as even the nurses rock! The doctors actually talk to you! Pensacola is a pretty cool place to live. I live on the beach and loving it!
