I have used it to meet new people when I get to an area and just this week stayed with someone I met through the site, while searching for housing in my new location.  It might not appeal to many people, but if you are fairly mellow and flexible, what traveler isnt (!) , you may find it a really good option, especially when traveling alone.  The gal I stayed with not only had a fabulous home, my Florida dream house, but is a mental health counselor and college prof, and traveler, we had great conversations!  

Now THAT looks incredibly interesting.  Have only just started looking but may be a great way to get introduced!
