There are times when I consider traveling by plane wtih my dogs but am overcome with reluctance.  WIth so many stories in the news now of poor treatment of human passengers I fear what would would happen to our most fragile passengers in the cargo hold!  I think of the places we could do our next big assignment...but we don't because it would require flying our dogs. I found this article on the ASPCA website and thought is provided some useful tips if we ever did decide to put our dogs on a plane.

The one thing that this article did not mention was the options that  are now available for desperate pet owners.  There is a pet only airline Pet Airways, which is a new "pet only" airline. They fly to a limited amount of cities and the cost is similar to regular human fare but they seem to really cater to the furry ones.  Also, some airlines allow small pets to fly in the cabin in an airline provided in-cabin carrier.  But if you have medium to large pets, have to fly, and can't leave them behind you may want to take a look at these tips:

It always seems funny to me that so many people think that to travel and live in apartments, the only breeds that are suited for this lifestyle are small breeds.  Actually, I have always had larger breed dogs who have done really well in apartment or condo settings.  Living in a place without a fenced yard required me to take my dogs on daily walks which provided the right amount of excercise for them to adapt well inside for long periods.  I have been rather fortunate to have always had dogs with very mild temperments and energy levels so they did not require constant activity.  The following article discusses this very issue...the energy level of the dog you choose, not the breed, is what can best determines how well your dog will do in an apartment.

Finding a hotel with a pet can be just as challenging as finding an pet friendly apartment at times!  Many times, you need a hotel on short notice while traveling across country which can be challenging with pets.  I recently experienced this traveling from Washington to Texas last month with our two dogs... yikes! Several times we weren't even sure what town we would end up in on a particular night so we had to make hotel reservations from the car.  We were lucky and able to find a LaQuinta each night through our GPS. I have been a long time loyal customer of LaQuinta hotels (www.lq.com), as they have always been known to accept pets without a fee in all of their hotels nationwide, thank goodness!  So, I thought it would be helpful to share this article from Apartmentguide.com (with their permission) as I found the information to be very useful!
